I am certain that we all have those days. You know, the ones where things just go wrong. Well, it is turning out to be one of those days for me.
It started out like any day. I was doing my regular house cleaning. I decided to clean the ceiling fans, because frankly, they were gross. The bedroom ceiling fan was not that difficult. Standing on the bed is always interesting. I saw a great idea for cleaning ceiling fans on Pinterest. So, of course, I had to try it. You use a pillow case. That way the dust doesn’t fall all over everything. It worked like a charm!
The kitchen ceiling fan was another story. I used the pillow case. However, the kitchen ceiling fan gets that nasty grease deposit from all the cooking. So it really didn’t work so well. I wiped off what I could then sprayed cleaner on each blade then tried wiping it off with a cloth. I got up and down off the chair so many times I know I got my workout for the day! I finally decided that it had to come apart. So I unscrewed the blades and I took the light cover off and washed them in the sink with Dawn. It worked! Then came putting them back up. I got two blades put up before I had to take a break. My poor old neck can only stand so much bending.
I put on the last of our eggs to boil for salad tonight. Then I went into the other room. I got distracted with the things we need for decorating our Christmas tree… until… the strangest noises came from the kitchen. BOOM!
The dogs and I ran into the kitchen to find burnt and exploded eggs. Who knew eggs could explode?! I just had to stand there and laugh!
Now… my Dad used to give my mom the hardest time because when they were first married she bought “Waterless” cookware. He said that she used to burn boiled eggs.
So today I achieved a new status. I joined my mother in burning boiled eggs!
My daughter called me earlier today. She was ready to quit being a mother. She was having one of those days when you just feel like you can’t live up to it all. I told her that we all have those days. We have our moments of glory when we just fail in our own eyes.
I remember feeling that way as a young mother. Some days I felt flat out overwhelmed. Being a parent is not a job where a lot of positive feedback heads your way. It does pay off though. Who do we love more than our own family? There may not be a paycheck to validate our work, but there are other payoffs, a smiling toddler, or a singing preschooler happy and safe in their own little world.
So tonight my family will not be eating the salad I planned. We will sit around the table and eat together though. It doesn’t get any better than that!
