Over Christmas I made homemade Christmas cards! It was so fun! Next I made a card to send to my niece who is getting married. Now I am working on Valentine’s Day.
Here is the wedding card.
If you’d like to take a gander at what I did for Christmas there are a few examples here.
Cold weather is finally hitting, bringing with it the desire to get ready for the holidays.
This year I am making ornaments. I haven’t done this in a few years so I am really excited! I love expressing my creative side. Painting is so fun!
It was difficult to get a picture of these little guys without getting some glare. They are painted on used flats from all the canning we’ve done. I figured why not recycle! I will hang them either on a small twine or a narrow red gingham ribbon I’ve had hanging around.
It was funny as I was painting them I told Nate that I was concerned because I needed some different colors of paint. I wasn’t sure if what I had would work for the little gingerbread people. He said, “Well you have brown don’t you?” I said, “Yes, but I need a couple different hues of brown.” He said that obviously he was a guy because “brown is brown is brown”. I assured him that there are many colors of brown. He asked me who was going to know the difference. At which point I stated that I would know the difference.
Poor guy! He got stuck with a creative perfectionist. Too bad that doesn’t carry over to housework!
I have some other projects that I can’t wait to get going on! Yeah for Christmas!
Are you getting ready for Christmas? What kinds of creative things are you doing?
Last night I couldn’t sleep. I was asked to teach a class on some kind of craft next month. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep!
There are so many fun things to do. I used to have craft booths in two locations. I am thinking about making some Christmas ornaments, or possibly some packaging for Christmas goodies.
Then today my daughter asked me if I would be interested in doing some craft fairs with her. Oh my goodness! I am so pumped! I have been thinking it would be fun to do some furniture make-overs. I have found a wonderful source of inspiration at Domestic Imperfection. One of her great ideas is here
I’ve been playing with hand-carving stamps. It takes a steady hand but it is kind of fun! I made this double-sided stamp from an eraser I bought in a 3-pack at the dollar store.

Painting really releases the creativity out of my soul. I know that tole painting isn’t as popular as it once was, but I think I can find some projects that will catch the eye.
What do you like to do? How do you nourish your creative side?
I have been enjoying the fall weather and continuing to do some canning since I last posted. Today I am finishing up some pickled figs. Our tree has produced so many figs it is ridiculous! I am completely amazed at how much one little tree can put on! There are still little ones growing too!
A week or two ago I made some chili sauce using a recipe from my Great Grandmother Empey. Now that is some delicious chili sauce!
Before that it was grapes. I am looking forward to drinking that home-canned grape juice this winter. Yum yum! We have a couple different varieties of grapes, concord and a lighter variety. You can see the two side by side in same jar in the picture.
Since the weather has been cooler I have been doing some baking as well. Nate loves ginger cookies so I made him a batch. I have to admit that it was my first time baking ginger cookies.
Today is Miss E’s birthday! So she is the recipient of my first ever hand-carved stamp. She is OBSESSED with the band, One Direction! So I made her a “1D” stamp. I hope she likes it!
I hope everyone is enjoying the last little bit of fall clean-up. What a beautiful season!

I have been working on my craft room. It is finally painted. It is a sunny yellow. It took a lot of work to get it looking like it does but it is so worth it!
Back in the day I was a tole painter. I had a craft booth in two of the biggest craft fairs in town. Oh I love painting! Craft trends change like all things do. So I’ve been looking into things that I can do. I found the coolest website. Almost as fun as Pinterest. It is called Random Tutorial. Find it here.
It leads you through all sorts of crafty websites. I even found one on tatting. I remember my aunt saying that too many of these arts were going to be lost if the next generation didn’t learn them. I never learned to do tatting from her. I wish I had, I still have the chance to learn it though!
My daughter is an amazing cake baker and decorator! She has made cakes like you wouldn’t believe! Cake decorating seems to be a fun new trend. It’s funny because I remember my mom learning how to make frosting roses. She was really good at it too! Since trends seem to kind of recycle, I am hoping maybe someday one of my grandkids will want to paint with me.
I have all the makings to start doing homemade cards. I have a ton of ideas too. I bought some alcohol markers and some water markers. It should be fun! I also have several tubs of yarn and crochet hooks. Plus an amazing amount of beads and jewelry making stuff. Miss E and I should have fun with that!
I also have my beloved paintbrushes and some paint. So many ideas of things to paint!
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? Do you read? Do you do something crafty?
Here is a funny story for you! Last week I called on an ad in Craigslist for a Sizzix texture machine and embossing folders. If you don’t know what that is you are not alone. It is a machine to put textures on homemade cards. It looks like a lot of fun but being low on funds, and having a husband who has taught me to be very thrifty, I didn’t want to spend the money they are asking at the craft stores.
So the lady who placed the ad lives about 30 minutes away, and the ad had been on for almost a week, so I figured my chances of getting it were nil. She said that she was coming to my town to visit her daughter. As I told her which part of town I live on we found that her daughter lives the next road over from mine. So she delivered the crafty bag of joys to me. How cool is that?
So I felt all happy with myself for getting such a great deal and having it delivered!
A few days ago she called me. She is clearing out a bunch of craft stuff and wondered if I would be interested. She said that she would email pictures to me.
Today she called. She said that she stopped counting at 40 pictures and decided it would be easier to just bring it to me. So this evening she brought her carload of scrapbooking/cardmaking stuff to my house. Oh I was drooling let me tell you! I bought a couple things from her.
We were laughing at how funny it was to be selling and buying stuff from her car. We decided that we looked like junkies buying our fix from the car! Look out for the craft police!
